Former world javelin champion Katharina Molitor from Germany has announced her retirement from athletics at the age of 34.

Molitor famously won the world javelin title at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing 2015 with the final throw of the competition, reaching out to a lifetime best of 67.69m to prise the title away from home favourite Lyu Huihui.

Molitor accrued eight top-eight finishes in major championships between 2008 and 2017. She drew the curtain on her career at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships when she exited in qualifying with 58.00m.

“It was already clear to me that my career would be over after the season but that it should end like that was - of course - not my plan,” Molitor told Leichtathletik.de.

Molitor now intends to finish her studies and will continue to play Bundesliga volleyball for Bayer Leverkusen.
