European indoor and outdoor champion Michal Haratyk got the better of his Polish teammate Konrad Bukowiecki for the first time outdoors this season at the third instalment of the TVP Sport Cup in Warsaw on Thursday (2).

All three of Haratyk’s valid throws would have been good enough for victory over Bukowiecki last night. Haratyk surpassed the 21 metre-line with his first throw of 21.12m before improving to 21.26m in the third round.

His other valid throw of 20.86m in the fourth round also bettered Bukowiecki’s best effort of 20.21m which came in the sixth round. “It didn’t work today,” said a laconic Bukowiecki on social media after the competition.

Haratyk’s winning throw of 21.26m also represented a season’s best and he moves to third on the 2020 European outdoor list behind Croatia’s Filip Mihaljevic (21.69m) and Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri (21.32m).

“I felt good two weeks ago, but there was some details in the technique to improve. I'm back on track. It's nice that the results came because it gives motivation for further work,” said Haratyk who also commented his elbow didn’t give him any problems either.

Haratyk and Bukowiecki are expected to go head-to-head many more times this year including at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzow on 6 September.

Weisshaidinger defeats Ceh in Eisenstadt

Five days after suffering his first defeat on Austrian soil since 2014, world bronze medallist and home favourite Lukas Weisshaidinger turned the tables on Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh in Eisenstadt on Thursday.

Both Weisshaidinger and Ceh have surpassed the 68 metre-line this year although a strong tailwind last night pegged back their distances. Weisshaidinger won with a best throw of 64.22m ahead of Ceh’s 63.51m, his first loss of 2020.

“Luki's performance was simply wonderful for that. In good conditions it would have been three meters more,” said Weisshaidinger’s coach Gregor Hogler.

After clocking 12.92 in the heats, Hungary’s Luca Kozak won the 100m hurdles final in a wind-assisted 12.96 ahead of Slovakia’s Stanislava Skvarkova in 13.08. Skvarkova was also faster in the heat and her wind legal time of 13.02 broke the long-standing Slovakian record.

European indoor 60m champion Jan Volko from Slovakia won the 100m in 10.25 and Germany’s Katharina Trost prevailed in the 800m in 2:04.93.

After breaking her shot put lifetime best last weekend with 14.97m, Ivona Dadic produced three more good performances yesterday: 1.82m in the high jump, 44.96m in the javelin and 13.86 in the 100m hurdles heats.

Vindics sets European 800m lead in Veszprem

Hungary’s Balazs Vindics eclipsed Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s European lead in the 800m in Veszprem on Thursday evening.

In his first 800m race since setting a national indoor record of 1:46.20, the 26-year-old Vindics opened his outdoor season with a lifetime best of 1:46.18 ahead of fellow Hungarian Tamas Kazi in 1:47.98. 'I trained quite well last week, so I was hoping it would be a good run,' he said.

Vindics has set his sights this season on beating the Hungarian 800m record of 1:45.37 set by Kazi, now 35, in 2013.
