Europe’s fastest men will gather in Nassau on Saturday knowing that they can be allowed a weekend off from individual success.

The Bahamas is the setting for the first IAAF World Relays with the Great Britain team led by World Indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty and the French squad including Jimmy Vicaut and Christophe Lemaitre.

And this new event is not all about the next two days, though, because up for grabs are places at next year’s World Championships in Beijing.

Vicaut is flying after his brilliant 9.95 in Aix-les-Bains last Sunday.

But Kilty has had a whirlwind year, rising from relative obscurity on the international stage to triumph in Sopot in March with his brilliant run of 6.49.

As he said at the time: 'I can’t believe it, it is a dream come true.'

His best outdoors in 2014 is 10.12 which puts him third on the European Rankings and he will be running the first leg here in a competition which starts on Saturday evening.

It is the next step for Kilty who will aim to be in the shake up at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich in August where Britain against France in the men’s 4 x 100m relay could be quite a clash.

As it will be in Nassau, only they will have to go some to peg back the Jamaicans who might be without Usain Bolt but do have Yohan Blake leading their line.

France’s women may look to prove a point after they were disqualified after finishing second in the 4 x 100m final at the World Championships in Moscow last summer when Britain were eventually promoted to bronze.

Celine Distel-Bonnet and Stella Akakpo, who were in that quartet, are in the Bahamas and the French will be a threat to the Jamaican and American teams.

Russia’s women won 4x400m relay gold in Moscow and while none of the four who triumphed in the final are in Nassau, the squad will be looking to show their strength in depth with Britain among their main rivals led by double 400m World champion Christine Ohuruogu.

The competition also includes relay events in the 4x200m, 4x800m and 4x1500m.
