Great Britain’s Nick Miller warmed up for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast later this month by breaking his national hammer record on his season’s debut.

His now usurped mark of 77.55m had stood since 2015 but at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California on Friday, Miller reached a superb 78.29m, the best in the world this year. The Brit won the European U23 title in Tallinn, Estonia in 2015 and he will begin as the favourite for the Commonwealth title later this month.

Coached by Tore Gustafsson, it was a good weekend for the coach as another of his athletes, Olympic bronze medallist Sophie Hitchon, won the women’s event with 71.41m, the sixth best in the world this year.

Denzel Comenentia won silver medals behind Poland’s Konrad Bukowiecki in the shot put at the 2014 World U20 Championships and 2017 European U23 Championships but the 22-year-old has been making splendid progress in the hammer this season.

Beginning his season with a lifetime best of 71.75m, Comenentia took the Dutch record in Atlanta a fortnight ago with 72.63m but he added nearly four metres to that mark at the Texas Relays in Austin with 76.11m followed by 76.29m.

There was also some excellent hammer throwing Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine on 30-31 March. With the European Athletics U18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary only three months away, Danylo Fedorov showed he will be contending for the hammer title after setting a lifetime best of 80.07m with the 5kg implement.

Fedorov will be looking to succeed teammate Myhaylo Havrylyuk as the European U18 Championships and Havrylyuk, 18, himself was in lifetime best shape, going out to 76.61m with the 6kg implement.
