The Bruno Zauli Awards ceremony on 6 December marks the commemoration of one of European Athletics’ most important figures.

Exactly 50 years after his death, Zauli will be celebrated for his tremendous efforts to promote the sport of athletics throughout Europe.

He was an enlightened Secretary General and later President of the Italian National Olympic Committee and Italian Athletics Federation (CONI FIDAL) through 1946-1957.

He was responsible for re-establishing athletics in Italy during the postwar period, and introduced the sport in the school curriculum.

Zauli is also to be credited for the creation of the European Cup, originally known as the Bruno Zauli Cup, which has since been replaced by the European Athletics Team Championships in 2009.

The idea was to create a competition where all European Athletics Member Federations could compete against one another. This formula was successful and the competition keeps growing in popularity.

Italian high-jumper Antonietta Di Martino and triple-jumper Fabrizio Donato will be handed the Bruno Zauli awards at the Hall of Honour in Rome, in light of their career achievements.

Di Martino was European indoor champion in 2011, while Donato was crowned European champion in 2010 in Barcelona and in 2011 brought the Italian national record to 17.73m.

In addition they both won gold in their respective events at the 2010 European Athletics Team Championships in Bergen.
