Reus equals German record

Home

The fast men were out in force at the weekend - as Europe's quickest showed they are in fine form.

They are led by Germany's Julian Reus who is the best so far and was the first to make his mark with a brilliant run of 6.53 in Erfurt on Friday night.

Not only is the time the quickest in the world this year but it matched the German record which Sven Matthes set in 1988.

With Christian Blum in second in 6.70, Reus had also run 6.57 earlier in the evening.

On Sunday in Cardiff, in his first 60m for four years, Britain's European 200m champion Adam Gemili made quite a statement of his own as he won the Welsh Championships in an impressive 6.59, with European 100m champion James Dasaolu second in 6.64 having earlier run 6.62.

It was an important day for Gemili because it was his first event since sustaining a hamstring injury in Birmingham in June which brought an end to his summer.

He had equalled his personal best of 6.68 in the heats before reducing that mark by 0.09.

The time of 6.65 was matched by both Richard Kilty and Christophe Lemaitre on Saturday.

Britain's Kilty, the world and European indoor champion, produced it in his first race of the season at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow while Lemaitre was in action in Lyon.

Back to Erfurt, and for Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen, another superb run.

Last month Klosterhalfen won gold in the junior race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Hyères and here, with a male pacemaker, she produced an eye-catching 1500m of 4:09.79.

After starting her indoor season in Split on Friday with a high jump of 1.95m, Croatia's Blanka Vlasic has immediately brought it to an end.

Vlasic said: 'I am in great physical shape. Perhaps the best I have ever been in. However, I still have a problem with my right Achilles that is bothering me and I am not ready to take a risk.'

Vienna on Saturday proved a memorable occasion for Great Britain's Seren Bundy-Davies who took her indoor 400m best to 51.60, the fastest time in the world this year.

At the same event, Alina Talay, the European Indoor champion, won the 60m hurdles in 8.09.

The woman who holds the world indoor record for that event (7.68) is Sweden's Susanna Kallur and at the age of 34, she is on the comeback trail after so much injury heartache.

The Olympics in Rio is her target and she got back in the groove by running 7.42 for the 60m flat in Falun on Saturday.

Norway's Mauritz Kashagen ran a national indoor 400m record of 46.88 in Rud and in Berlin, European junior discus champion Claudine Vita opened her season with a throw of 58.34m.

At the Cross Internacional de San Sebastian on Sunday, a European Athletics Cross Country Permit event, Spain's Antonio Abadia was a fine fourth on home soil in 29:51 over 10km as Ethiopia's Imane Merga, the former world cross country champion, won in 29:00 from Kenya's Dominic Kiptarus (29:03) and Eritrean Goitom Kifle (29:07).

In the women’s 6.3km race, Spain's Diana Martin (27:33) was third as Hiwot Ayalew (26:57) led an Ethiopian one-two from Belaynesh Oljira (27:11) with Britain's Steph Twell in fourth (27:39).

There are 58 meetings across Europe this week, including three European Athletics Permit events, one on Tuesday, one on Friday and one on Saturday, and on Sunday in Kastamonu, the European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country. All the information is at http://www.european-athletics.org/calendar/
