The German Athletics Federation (DLV) have announced Volker Beck as their new senior national sprint coach.

'Volker Beck is a highly valued and experienced colleague. He will work alongside DLV head coach Idriss Gonschinska,' said sports director Thomas Kurschilgen.

Gonschinska said: 'The newly formed staff will collaborate this year with good a balance of young and experienced trainers in order to face the challenges of the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.'

Beck, 57, became the first German to run the 400m hurdles in less than 49 seconds. His greatest achievement was at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, when he took gold.

To this day, he remains the only German Olympic champion over 400m hurdles.
