After narrowly missing out on a medal in front of his home supporters at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Eskilstuna last month, Kalle Berglund gave the Swedish fans something to cheer about at the Folksam Challenge in Gothenburg.

Berglund, 19, who was fourth in the 800m at the championships, stepped up to the 1500m and broke the national junior record.

His run was one of the standout performances at this European Athletics Outdoor Area Permit meeting as he showed his great potential.

Berglund finished third in 3:41.92, behind two much more senior athletes as Russia’s Valentin Smirnov, 29, won (3:41.18) and Denmark's Andreas Bueno, 27, was second (3:41.40).

It has been a good summer for Berglund who broke his 800m personal best when he was sixth (1:46.85) at the European Athletics Team Championships' Super League in Cheboksary in June.

The Folksam Challenge was another fine event for Great Britain’s David Omoregie, the newly-crowned European Under-23 110m hurdles champion, who is having a quite a run of result after winning gold in Tallinn in July.

At the Anniversary Games in London a few weeks later he broke his personal best with 13.50 and here in Gothenburg he won in 13.55 as he beat Norway’s Vladimir Vukicevic (13.74) and fellow Briton David King (13.76).

There was a Swedish 1-2-3 in the men’s 100m A race as Tom Kling-Baptiste (10.43) beat Sulayman Bah (10.45) and Patrick Andersson (10.50) while Britain’s Leon Reid was first in the 200m (20.77).

Estonia’s Mart Israel narrowly won the discus (60.68m) with his fourth round throw proving decisive as he beat Sweden’s Daniel Stahl (60.48).

A run of 53.67 brought victory for Norway’s Tara Marie Norum in the 400m, Sweden’s Klara Mattson won the pole vault with a season’s best (3.90m) and Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers leapt 6.58m to win the long jump.
