  • Berlin European Championships will be a “Sports Festival”

Almost six months before the start of the European Athletics Championships, Berlin has presented a new event campaign for Germany's biggest sporting event of the year.

In a new campaign, Berlin 2018 is being called 'Das Sport Festival' in Germany and being promoted with Olympic discus thrower Robert Harting and heptathlete Carolin Schaefer. Fittingly, a further, cheaper price category has opened, offering the “FESTIVAL-Ticket” for the price of 25 euros.

Meanwhile, 150,000 tickets have already been sold in pre-sales and a glossy magazine whets the appetite for the competitions ahead.

'With 48 disciplines over the six-day event, the European Championships confirm their incomparable diversity. As part of the European Championships, with a total of seven different sports, we can confidently talk about a sports festival in both Berlin and Glasgow', said Berlin 2018 director Frank Kowalski, drawing comparison between significant music festivals with many different live acts in the two host cities.

The European Championships is a major new multi-sport event taking place every four years, supported by Europe’s free-to-air broadcasters, which aggregates the existing senior continental championships of Athletics (European Athletics), Aquatics (LEN), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (UEG), Rowing (FISA), Triathlon (ETU), with a new Golf Team Championships (ET & LET) – all unified under a common brand.

The world class sporting and cultural cities of Glasgow and Berlin will host the first edition of the championships from 2-12 August 2018. The vision for the event is to create a must-watch must-attend experience that elevates the champions of Europe during an 11-day celebration of sport and packed 10-day broadcast schedule.

Just like Woodstock, Berlin 2018 wants to be remembered as a giant party. From 7-12 August 2018, it will be celebrated in the Berlin Olympic Stadium and in the heart of Berlin. True to the motto 'Love, Peace and Freedom', top athletes from around Europe will be battling it out for gold, silver or bronze. 'Just like in 2009, Berlin is going to experience a colossal celebration, but this time, better', said Harting, excitedly while looking forward to his last international competition.

Berlin has also released a further, less expensive price category (PC) for tickets in the Olympic Stadium. In just four blocks, the 'FESTIVAL-Ticket' is cheaper than ever before at just 25 euros for the evening session. Due to the limited availability of 3,200, Berlin 2018 expects the seats in this block to sell out quickly. In total, already a record number of around 150,000 tickets have been sold in pre-sales for the Championships.

Glossy magazine whets our appetite for the competition ahead

The 132-page BERLIN2018 magazine is generating enthusiasm internationally and leaves anticipation for the European Athletics Championships in Berlin. Expressive photos, interesting content and an extensive service section make for an entertaining read.

For the high-quality printed product, star photographers such as Jim Rakete have captured images of the heroes and heroines of athletics; legends Heike Drechsler and Carlo Thränhardt answer questions; Berlin's best chef Tim Raue creates his special BERLIN2018 menu; and the final secrets of Berlin's Olympic Stadium are revealed. The magazine's introduction is reserved for actor and artistic director Dieter Hallervorden, who has authored a noteworthy editorial.

Jim Rakete invited five of Germany's most famous athletes in his studio and took breathtaking black and white portraits of Tatjana Pinto, Ruth Spelmeyer, Lisa Ryzih, Robert Harting and Rico Freimuth. 'Working with such a renowned photographer as Jim was excellent fun. The photos are phenomenal and I love them,' said Pinto.

The photos themselves almost look as though they are alive – a similar effect to a slow-motion shot in a film. 'I love working with athletes. Shoots with them are always something special because they always approach it with an informal, carefree attitude', said Rakete.

Gina Lickenkemper, Konstanze Klosterhalfen, Rebekka Haase, Thomas Rohler and Hagen Pohle also had a shoot with Michael Handelmann. Far from the track where they train and compete, they were photographed doing hobbies, resulting in numerous photos with real wow-effect.

Luckenkemper is pictured sitting high on horse 'Picasso' while Olympic javelin champion Rohler goes fly-fishing in the waters surrounding his hometown Jena. Klosterhalfen demonstrates her passion for ballet in an old theatre hall and Haase poses in her eye-catching red dress with her flute. Meanwhile, Pohle drums for his ice hockey team, the Berlin Bears, to victory behind their gate.

For the traditional costume label 'Angermaier', Alexandra Burghardt, Laura Müller, Alexandra Wester, Max Hess and Raphael Holzdeppe dressed in lederhosen, chequered skirts, waistcoats and dirndls. The Munich market leader designed a special collection for the European Athletics Championships and fitted five top athletes in typical Bavarian outfits. These photos will access new target audiences for the promotion of the European Athletics Championships.

In addition to the noteworthy photo series, the magazine offers an extensive service section with valuable information concerning the European teams as well as numerous tips for staying in Berlin. Under the headline of 'The Legend of the Olympic Stadium' there are atmospheric photos as well as important information about the historic venue of Berlin 2018. Included is a story about the high jumper Margarete 'Gretel“ Bergmann, who, as a Jewish girl, was denied participation in the 1936 Olympic Games in the Nazi era.

The magazine, produced with FLYERALARM Media, is now available for the price of €5 plus shipping. Order yours via email from [email protected].
