When President Hansjörg Wirz announced Bohdan Bondarenko as the men’s European Athlete of the Year on Saturday at the European Athletics Awards Night in Tallinn, it came as a big surprise to the Ukrainian.
“Just like my fans, I didn’t know until the last minute,” Bondarenko explained.
“It was very pleasant to receive the award. It’s a big honour and a great victory.
“I would like to thank my coach and our doctor. They helped me to win this year.”
2013 was a terrific year for Bondarenko, 24. He took gold at the IAAF World Championships and won the IAAF Diamond League Race.
He also became the Ukrainian national record holder, clearing 2.41m, the highest jump since 1994.
Bondarenko was thrilled to be present at the award ceremony.
“I rarely wear suits, but I felt comfortable and it was nice to change atmosphere,” he said.
After the Awards Night, Bondarenko stayed in Tallinn for an extra day. This gave him the chance to discover the city.
He shared his Tallinn experience: “My manager, Aivar Karotamm, showed me and my girlfriend the city, and took us to a famous ‘garlic’ restaurant.
“All dishes, even the ice, were served with garlic! This was something new to me.”
After such great success Bondarenko admits he has received more recognition than he is used to.
“My life has changed. I now feel that more attention is given to me.
There are many press conferences, interviews, ceremonies; it’s very pleasant but also hard emotionally. I must remember to stay focused on my training,” he said.
The Ukrainian star has now joined a training camp in Yevpatoria (Crimea), in preparation for next season.
This has not left him much time to relax.
“I feel tired after an exhausting season, having only spent three days off in September, at the seaside near Yevpatoria.”
He may be tired but Bondarenko appears to be already getting back to work after what will be remembered as an exceptional season.
