Carton plotting a date in Tallinn

It is a big summer ahead for European Athletics - and one woman is planning exactly where she would like to be.

Belgium’s Louise Carton is 21 next month and she has had an outstanding winter, which in January saw her win the Lotto Cross Cup over 6km in Hannut.

Now for the track and the aim of more success at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn between 9-12 July.

I hope for many winters like this, but in the summer I want it to mean something. The 5000m at the European U23 Championships is the next target.

There in lies the new and exciting challenge for this young distance runner in that she has never taken her body through the extra challenge of what the 5000m brings on the track.

She has a personal best of 9:29.83 for the 3000m and 4:26.42 for the 1500m and she is proven over the long distances on the cross country, as she showed in Hannut.

Speaking to sporza.be, Carton said: 'I am glad the (cross country) season is over. I am in need of rest, especially mentally. That break does not last long because the summer season is already at the door. I want to get into it - fly. I wonder how I will run on the track?

'I like to focus on the 5000m in Tallinn. I think that is feasible. I want my times on the 1500m and 3000m to improve. I want to do everything step by step. I leave everything open and work calmly.'

History is on her side, though, at the European Athletics U23 Championships, because the links between Belgian success on the track and cross country go well together.

At the last event in Tampere in 2013, Belgium won one gold medal in the shape of Pieter-Jan Hannes in the 1500m who later in the year went on to win the under-23 title at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Belgrade.

If she succeeds in Tallinn, it could be the type of double that Carton is looking towards come December when the SPAR European Cross Country Championship brings the athletics year to an end in Hyères-Toulon.
