Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter rounded out her breakthrough season by setting a course record to win the We Run Rome 10km, a certified road race by European Athletics Running for All, on New Year’s Eve (31).

In her first race since winning the Florence Marathon in a European-leading mark and national record of 2:24:17 in November, Chemtai Salpeter was victorious again on Italian soil, breaking the tape in the Italian capital in 31:46 - the fifth fastest time by a European in 2018.

Chemtai Salpeter, whose season was highlighted by wins at the European 10,000m Cup and over the same distance at the European Championships in Berlin, won by nearly two minutes from Ukraine’s Sofiia Yaremchuk (33:34) and Italy’s Maria Chiara Cascavilla (34:22).

Daniele Meucci was forced to miss the European Championships due to illness but the former European marathon champion continued his late season resurgence with victory.

While his margin of victory wasn’t quite as emphatic, Meucci still won by a clear margin in 29:05 from last year’s winner James Kibet from Kenya and Stefano La Rosa who were both timed at 29:19.

Meucci, who was part of Italy’s bronze medal-winning team at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, is now targeting the Rome Marathon on 7 April.

Another European champion was in action at the famous BoClassic New Year’s Eve road race in Bolzano (31), another certified race by European Athletics Running for All.

Belarus' Volha Mazuronak won the European marathon title in Berlin and she made it onto the podium once again but this time over 5km, clocking 16:08 behind Ethiopia’s Netsanet Gudeta (15:46) and Kenya’s Janet Kisa (15:49).

Tamirat Tola made it an Ethiopian double over 10km in 28:12 while Yemaneberhan Crippa was the top home and European finisher, placing eighth in 29:23.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
