  • Europe will be active on Global Running Day

Millions of people from more than 150 countries around the world of all ages and abilities are expected to lace up their trainers on Global Running Day on Wednesday (7) to celebrate the power and importance of running and fitness.

Running events and activities will be taking place across the globe, including group runs, family fun runs, virtual and in-person races, treadmill challenges, as well as a host of other activities.

From organised runs in Madrid and Valencia, to a kids’ run in Monaco and celebratory events in Prague and further afield, Europe is firmly embracing Global Running Day which is firmly backed by European Athletics, Running for All and the European Running Business Conference.

“This is a superb initiative which admirably compliments the European Athletics philosophy and Mission Statement of Your Sport For Life. We are very happy and proud to publicly support the second edition of Global Running Day, and are encouraging our 51 Member Federations and all other athletics organisations across Europe to get people to pledge to take part.

“European Athletics has its own initiative, Running For All, which supports the running movement in Europe so we want to see Europe on its feet on June 7,” said European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen.

A key component of Global Running Day is youth involvement and the second Million Kid Run will once again be the focal point of the event. The Million Kid Run is about making fitness fun and accessible and inspiring children to embrace running as a way to get moving and stay healthy.

Last year, more than 2.5 million people from 177 countries - including nearly 700,000 children - pledged to run 9.2 million miles on Global Running Day.

Pledging for Global Running Day and the second Million Kid Run remains open until 7 June on GlobalRunningDay.org. Runners of all ages and abilities can pledge to run on June 7 and add their name to the list of people from all over the world who are coming together to celebrate the sport on Global Running Day.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
