The World Broadcaster Meeting for the Amsterdam 2016 European Athletics Championships took place 26-27 October, with International Broadcasters from across Europe in attendance.

The Amsterdam summit was led by NOS, the Host Broadcaster of the 2016 European Athletics Championships.

About 30 representatives from France Télévisions, NOS, YLE (Finland), ARD, ZDF (Germany), TV4 (Sweden), RTE (Ireland), NRK (Norway), Eurosport-Discovery, Eurovision, the local organising committee and European Athletics took part in discussions.

European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen and Amsterdam 2016 LOC President Age Fluitman welcomed the delegates.

President Hansen said, “We are sure Amsterdam 2016 will be a success. We look forward to our best stars performing and to a full stadium every day. It is a fantastic opportunity to promote our sport, and we need the help of the international broadcasters to do this.

“With our main Championships every two years, we are creating more European champions, more stars, on a more regular basis. Amsterdam will be a spectacular curtain-raiser for the Rio Olympics. There will be big interest in our sport during the Olympic year with Amsterdam a key milestone in the lead up to Rio.

“With Amsterdam promising ‘Athletics like never before,’ we have an exciting event to offer to television audiences, including javelin and discuss qualification in the Museum Square and the half marathon championships in the city.”

At the previous six-day European Athletics Championships in Zurich in 2014, a total television audience of 358 million watched the action unfold.

Thirty-three broadcasters produced 1,677 hours of coverage (live, deferred, highlights and sports magazines) for the championships that took place 12-17 August last year.

The 2016 European Athletics Championships will take place at the Olympic Stadium from 6-10 July.
