Mo Farah is four weeks away from the race which could change his life, and on Sunday in New York he is ready to show the form he is in.

But Great Britain’s double Olympic and triple world champion has revealed how he deals with balancing life as an athlete and being a family man to his wife and three daughters.

On April 13, Farah will make his debut over 26.2 miles when he runs in the London Marathon. One of the greatest track athletes of all time, his performance then could plot the course of the rest of his career as this new distance might become his target for the major championships ahead.

But the preparations mean long stretches away from his family on the west coast of America in Portland, with him preparing for his year in Kenya.

Farah said: 'It's what it takes to be a champion. I wish I could just sit in my house and do stuff with them, but I wouldn't have achieved what I have.”

Speaking to sportinglife.com, he added: “My kids are lucky to have a nice place and we can buy them nice stuff. I guess it takes sacrifice to be a champion.'

Farah ran half the race in last year’s London Marathon to sample the course but in New York he could break his British record of 1:00:59 from New Orleans a year ago.

In 2011 he ran 1:00:23 in New York before the course was changed to make it suitable for record purposes.

But to win will not be easy as Farah, the triple European 5000m champion, faces Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai who has a half-marathon best of 58:58.

Farah, though, is determined to make the most of the race.

'Training's been going well,” he added in an interview with the BBC. 'I am testing myself to see where I am. I will try to do well in the race rather than focus on the time.

'This is about feeling good and ticking every box. It's about feeling great and getting ready for London.'
