Recently minted European champions Miltiadis Tentoglou and Paraskevi Papahristou will be looking to emulate their successes from Berlin at the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 1-3 March.
'They want to confirm their number one positions in Europe also in the indoor season. We started the preparation with full swing and in good mood,' said their coach Georgi Pomaski.
Tentoglou was crowned European champion in the long jump at the age of 20, just over a year after winning the European U20 title in Grosseto. Tentoglou was considered the pre-competition favourite in Berlin with reigning two-time champion Greg Rutherford absent due to injury and he shouldered those expectations brilliantly, setting a season’s best of 8.25m to win his first senior title and continue his rapid ascent through the ranks.
His winning jump in Berlin was also the second best mark of his career behind his national U20 record of 8.30m from 2017.
Perennial major championships bronze medallist Papahristou won her first major title in the triple jump in Berlin at the age of 29. Papahristou equalled her season’s best of 14.60m in the second round to defeat reigning European indoor champion Kristin Gierisch from Germany.
Greece finished seventh on the medal table at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade last year with three medals - one of each colour. Ekaterini Stefanidi and Konstadinos Filippidis won gold and silver medals respectively in the pole vault while Papahristou came away with bronze in the triple jump.
