  • Important recommendations come out of Development Commission summit

The European Athletics Development Commission met in Bologna, Italy, at the weekend.

Recommendations were put forward for developing the framework of education measures for 2015-2017, including having another High-Performance Conference in 2016 following the success of the inaugural version last year.

Also discussed was the creation of a new forum at the European Athletics Convention for Member Federation leaders about women in athletics, with this concept to be approved by the Executive Board.

Chaired by European Athletics Vice President Jean Gracia, the 11-member Commission received updates on all European Athletics development activities and discussed proposals and ideas for the future.

Mr Gracia briefed the Commission on his work as Europe’s representative on the IAAF Development Commission and on the implementation of the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, which includes the EU’s budget for funding sport-related projects.

Among the main items covered were reviews of two recent and successful educational measures: last autumn’s High-Performance Conference in Frankfurt and January’s Health & Well-Being Conference in Marseille.

Progress on the draft standards for the safety and quality of road races, which are currently in a Europe-wide consultation exercise, and the Green Inspiration sustainability project, which was delivered last year and has been extended for 2014, were also discussed.

The Commission normally meets twice per year – in the spring and autumn - and advises European Athletics’ Executive Board and Council on all matters related to the development of the sport.
