Isinbayeva has record plans

Home

The return of Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva will become one of the athletics stories of next year.

But if you think the multiple pole vault gold medallist will be back for a last shot at just becoming Olympic champion, think again.

Isinbayeva, 33, has missed two years, after giving birth to daughter Eva in June 2014, having won the world title in Moscow the previous summer for the third time.

But the greatest woman pole vaulter in history now wants to leave an even more impressive legacy if next year is her final major season in the sport.

Isinbayeva holds the outdoor world record of 5.06m from Zurich 2009, she is second on the indoor lists with 5.01m and she craves that moment again - when she takes the sport into a new era.

She said of her 2016 targets as she spoke to Sport Express: 'Not only the Olympic Games but in my heart is also a dream about the World record.

“After experiencing that feeling several times in the past you want to do it again. This could be one of the emotional highlights of my career.'

Indeed it would.

Isinbayeva is the only woman to break five metres for the event outdoors, holding the 11 leading marks in the world lists, but indoors she dropped to second in the rankings in 2013 when America’s Jenn Suhr cleared 5.02m, breaking the Russian’s mark by a centimetre.

She was back in full training this year and in Rio has her sights set on a third Olympic title, after her golds in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

In London 2012 she won bronze but then came back 12 months later for an amazing success in front of her home crowd with gold at the World Championships in Moscow.

She has achieved everything there is to achieve in her event, with four world indoor titles, a gold medal at both the European Athletics Championships and the European Athletics Indoor Championships as well as being a European under-23 champion and a world and European junior champion.

But bowing out with one more word record success would be something quite special.
