Asmir Kolasinac has an outstanding record on the European athletics scene - and now he wants to enhance it even further.
Serbian Kolasinac has confirmed he plans to defend his shot put title at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague in March after his superb success in Gothenburg last year.
And he will be joined in the Serbian team by another of the country's best athletes as world long jump bronze medallist Ivana Spanovic will also be in the Czech Republic’s capital looking for glory in the major event of the indoor season.
Kolasinac took European gold with a distance of 20.62m in 2013 in a competition where he was in the lead from the second round with 20.60m, his winning mark arriving two rounds later. He triumphed ahead of Hamza Alic, of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 20.34m and the Czech Republic's Ladislav Prasil with 20.29m.
Since then Kolisanic has won the shot put twice at the European Athletics Team Championships and this summer he was fifth at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.
When his teammate Spanovic jumped 6.82m for bronze in Moscow in the summer of 2013, she became the first Serbian athlete to win a medal in the history of the IAAF World Championships.
She followed that up with another bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot last March before then taking a step up the podium with silver at the European Athletics Championships in August in a tremendous final.
Spanovic made her mark early at the Letzigrund Stadium as she led with 6.81m from the first round before defending champion Eloyse Lesueur, of France, hit 6.85m in the fourth round to snatch gold away from her.
A few weeks later, the pair met again at the Continental Cup in Marrakech and it was a similar outcome as Lesueur beat Spanovic once more, this time with 6.66m to the Serbian’s 6.56m.
Lesueur won silver in Gotenburg when Spanovic was fifth and if the Frenchwoman decides to compete in Prague, it could be one of the duels of the weekend.
