Lavillenie back in the groove

Home

Renaud Lavillenie overcame his Amsterdam blip in the only way he knows on Monday night - by showing that form might be temporary but world class is permanent.

The French pole vaulter cleared 5.96m for a superb victory at the Meeting International de Sotteville as he counts down the days to the defence of his Olympic title in Rio.

Lavillenie's victory at this European Athletics Outdoor Classic meeting saw him improve his world-leading mark by a centimetre, an important step after the disappointment of his 'no-height' at the European Athletics Championships.

Lavillenie cleared 5.96m at the first attempt but missed out three times at 6.01m and will no doubt he will look towards six metres again at the end of this week when he competes at the IAAF Diamond League in London.

It was a Lavillenie one-two at Sotteville-les-Rouen as his brother Valentin finished second with 5.60m and there was further French success in the women's 100m as Stella Akakpo (11.40) did just enough to beat American Lekeisha Lawson (11.41).

A month ago, Tracey Andersson took the Swedish national hammer record to 70.99m in Bottnaryd and she was not far away from that mark again here in France as she won in 70.74m, while in the javelin, there was a good scalp for Ukraine's Dmytro Kosynsky as he threw 81.73m to beat Trinidad & Tobago's Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (79.62m).
