It was a fine a year for Frenchman Pascal Martinot-Lagarde - but not quite as good as he hoped it would be.

But now he has turned his attention to the indoor season and the opportunity to write some more history in his home country.

Martinot-Lagarde, 23, broke the French 110m hurdles record with his 12.95 in Monaco in July, a stunning time that was the quickest by a European this year and the second best in the world.

But when it came to the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, he was beaten into third by Russia's Sergey Shubenkov and Great Britain's William Sharman.

It is now just over two months until the indoor season moves into full swing, with the focal point being the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague in March.

And Martinot-Lagarde is chasing another French record along the way.

February will mark the 10th anniversary of Ladji Doucoure running 7.42 for the national 60m hurdles mark and Martinot-Lagarde, who has an indoor best of 7.45, has that time in his sights.

He said: 'I hope to break the record indoors this winter.'

Martinot-Lagarde is putting together an impressive medal collection, with European bronze, indoors and out, alongside the silver he won at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot in March to go with his bronze from the 2012 event.

But he wants more. Speaking to lechorepublicain.fr, when asked if he can run quicker, he said: 'Sure but my priority will instead be to conquer the world and European titles that are missing from my record.'

It’s a good time for French athletics. The country won nine golds among their 23 medals at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich and next month Sophie Duarte will defend her title at the SPAR European Cross Country title in Samokov.

Martinot-Lagarde said: 'A new generation has arrived...the dynamics of success has had a strong impact on the atmosphere.'

A success he will hope to carry on indoors in 2015.
