The medals that are to be awarded during the 2016 European Athletics Championships are clearly inspired by Amsterdam.
“By striking the first medals, we have yet again come a step closer to the start of the championships. In less than a month we’ll be able to enjoy athletics like never before,” says Event Ambassador Ellen van Langen.
The Dutch designer/goldsmith Liza Meijer created the design of the medals which have an asymmetric shape. “The design might be a bit unexpected and surprising, just like the city of Amsterdam itself,” says Meijer.
Both Amsterdam’s picturesque canal houses, as well as the ECH 2016 logo, have a prominent place in the design. The championships’ logo is also clearly visible on the ribbon. The medal is 4 millimetres thick and has a diameter of almost ten centimetres. Athletes will be awarded these unique pieces of gold, silver or bronze in 44 events.
