Former European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey joined five London families for a training run in the lead up to the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run on 2 July, a race which has been given a five-star certification by European Athletics Running for All.

One of the events on the programme to encourage participation is the Great Newham London Family Run and Pavey went running with parents and their children who will be taking part in the event next month. Pavey emphasised the importance of encouraging children to exercise as well as the benefits of taking part in running events as a family.

“As parents, it's really important for us to be good role models to our kids and show them it's enjoyable to be active. Children often respond to what their parents do and if their parents are sitting around and not getting active then they'll probably think that's normal,” said Pavey, a five-time Olympian.

“But if their parents are getting out and being active then they'll do that and this is a brilliant event because it's giving families the opportunity to get out there and enjoy being active together,” she added.

Pavey turns 44 in September but the Brit is still competitive and she is aiming to make the British team for the World Championships in London this August. Pavey lives and trains in Devon and her son Jacob often accompanies her mother along the trails around her house on his bike.

Thousands of runners will have the opportunity on 2 July to run around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and into the Olympic Stadium which hosted the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and will host the 2017 World Championships.

Entries are still open for the Simplyhealth Great Newham London Run and Family Run on 2 July.
