European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz continued with his extensive travels this year, promoting the sport of athletics, with a visit to Greece last week to attend the 7th Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) Symposium.
President Wirz also met with the Association Hellenique d'Athlétisme Amateur (SEGAS), joint organisers of the symposium, and took time to discuss with AIMS President Paco Borao road running in Europe.
During his visit, President Wirz was a special guest at the 31st Athens Classic Marathon 2013, which had about 30,000 participants running over various distances including the marathon.
The goal of the AIMS Marathon Symposium is to encourage closer co-operation and exchange of views on issues of mutual interest to assist organisers in improving their races. The theme of this year's symposium was ”Marathon events and security issues'.
While in Greece, the President was also presented with a special award by the Mayor of Athens Georgios Kaminis on the occasion of an official dinner hosted by the City.
