European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz met with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, and the President of the German Athletics Federation, Clemens Prokop, in Berlin on Friday 3 April.

President Wirz awarded the European Athletics Plaque of Merit to Mayor Müller for his outstanding contribution and assistance to the development of athletics through the organisation of the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Berlin 2018 will be the third time the European Athletics Championships are organised in Germany after Stuttgart 1986 and Munich 2002, when around 1,500 athletes will be competing.

The meeting in Berlin also focused on the coordination that will be required between the two host cities of Berlin and Glasgow that will be involved in staging the 2018 European Sports Championships, a new multi-sport concept that will include the European Athletics Championships.

European Athletics and the Governing Bodies for swimming, cycling, rowing and triathlon will organise their individual championships as part of this inaugural European Sports Championships over 12 days in the summer of 2018.

This innovative new approach brings the existing European championships together in a sustainable format once every four years in order to continue building their prestige, profile and media exposure.
