Only once in the last 14 years has Sabrina Mockenhaupt lost in the 5000m at the German Athletics Championships, and that came in 2006.

But this weekend in Nuremberg she will face quite a challenge as Alina Reh looks towards the next step of her career.

It has been some few weeks for Reh, who left Eskilstuna with double gold at the European Athletics Junior Championships after winning the 3000m (9:12.29) and 5000m (16:02.01).

Everything is coming together well for Reh as her success arrived at a time when she has just began pursuing a working career on a supermarket training course near Munich.

Reh, 18, said: 'I don’t study, I have just started an education at a supermarket and maybe I will be a manager.'

She combines her time with her brilliant athletics pursuits and she added: 'I don’t know what my better event. I train for both distances.

'In the 5000m, you can start slower, you can have a little of bit of time and you can make it your own race and I like that.'

All ingredients which will make her determined to become the German champion and beat the dominant presence of Mockenhaupt, 34, the 2005 European Indoor 3000m bronze medallist whose 5000m personal best is 14:59.88 compared to Reh’s 15:55.82.

Nine years ago Irina Mikitenko beat her to the 5000m crown at these national championships and it should be quite a race as Mockenhaupt looks for another title in a year where she had ankle surgery at the end of May.

It is an important weekend also for javelin world champion Christina Obergfoll, who has returned to the sport this summer after becoming a mum.

She won the world title in Moscow with a throw of 69.05m and reports from Germany say it is not definite she will go to Beijing to defend her crown next month, with much depending on how she performs at the championships in a season where her furthest throw has been 63.07m in Oregon in May, the 19th best in the world.
