Reif jumps to his new task

Home

Christian Reif was denied the chance to defend his long jump title at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki as injury struck, but now he is on a mission.

The German field eventer has announced that he is embarking on the final two years of his career, with his plan being retirement after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Reif returned to the podium last year when he won bronze at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Göteborg before finishing sixth at the IAAF World Championships.

Now the 29-year-old has this summer's European Athletics Championships in Zurich in his sights as he looks to regain a title he won so spectacularly in 2010.

Reif said: 'Sixth (in Moscow) was not a success but not a defeat. I am looking forward to Zurich because at the last European Championships, I could not start due to injury.

'I feel fit and I am confident that I can get a consistently good performance.'

Speaking to spox.com, he set out his plans. Reif said: 'The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio is my big dream. But then I stop with the long jump.'

He made quite an impression in Barcelona as he won the European gold with a Championship record of 8.47m with his third jump.

Even though he could not make Helsinki, he returned for the Olympic Games in London but agonisingly missed out on the final by one place decided on countback.

Reif was back in the groove at the European Athletics Indoor Championships last March when 8.07m brought him bronze as Russian Aleksandr Menkov won with 8.31m.

Moscow might not have gone the way he hoped but he still ended last summer fifth on the European Athletics rankings with 8.27m, a list led by World champion Menkov with 8.56m.

The Russian will be the favourite for Zurich but Reif is ready to have a big say.
