Olympic champions Thomas Rohler from Germany and Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium have been voted Male and Female European Athlete of the Month for May.

Rohler opened his season in outstanding fashion at the Doha Diamond League on 5 May when he produced the world’s longest javelin throw in more than two decades - 93.90m to move to second on the world all-time lists behind Jan Zelezny.

Thiam has also carried her Olympic form into the 2017 season with a brilliant two-day display at the Gotzis Hypo Meeting where she became the fourth heptathlete in history to surpass the 7000 point-barrier. Her score of 7013 points moved her up to third on the world all-time lists, one place behind European record-holder Carolina Kluft from Sweden with 7032 points.

Thiam improved or equalled her lifetime best in five events in Gotzis. Her standout individual performances included a 1.98m clearance in the high jump and a six metre improvement in the javelin with 59.32m to break the Belgian record.

Rohler and Thiam were both comprehensive winners in this month's voting. Rohler scored twice as many votes as second-placer Pawel Fajdek from Poland with 647 votes while Thiam scored 1339 votes to win by nearly one thousand votes from Türkiye's Eda Tugsuz.
