  • Russia ready for a Euro champs medal spree

Russia have named a team of 93 athletes for the European Athletics Championships in Zurich next month - and it is packed with gold medallists.

'That is our final team. Any changes are possible only due to unforeseen circumstances,' said head coach Valentin Maslakov.

Their squad includes the Olympic high jump champion Ivan Ukhov and world indoor high jump champion Mariya Kuchina and two of their winners from the IAAF World Championships in Moscow last summer - long jumper Aleksandr Menkov and Aleksandr Ivanov, in the 20km walk.

Triple jumpers Lyukman Adams and Yekaterina Koneva, who, along with Kuchina, won World indoor gold in Sopot in March, are also in a team which has big hopes of leaving Zurich with many medals.

Sergey Shubenkov is defending the 110m hurdles title that he won in Helsinki in 2012 while in the javelin, Dmitriy Tarabin, who won bronze in Moscow, and Mikhail Ryzhov, who won silver in the 50km walk last year, will be among the favourites for a podium place.

The longer walk will be a fascinating race because Ryzhov faces the man who beat him in his own country 12 months ago, Ireland’s Robert Heffernan, and the Russian is set to go into the European Athletics Championships top of the rankings.

He leads the lists with 3:39:05 while Heffernan had competed over the distance this year. It is bubbling up into a great duel.

Double European indoor long jump champion Darya Klishina will be looking for her first outdoor senior European medal and Anisya Kirdyapkina, who won silver in the 20km walk in Moscow, will be aiming to go one better this time.

While the men’s high jump will make wonderful viewing, as Ukhov faces world champion Bohdan Bondarenko, of the Ukraine, with the world record of 2.45m once more under threat, there is another Russian hoping to make his mark at the event.

Danyil Tsyplakov won silver at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tampere last year when he cleared 2.28m and last weekend in Kazan he took the national title with an outdoor personal best of 2.32m.

Now all eyes are on the European Athletics Championships as he looks to go even higher.
