In Amsterdam last summer Jazmin Sawyers leaped 6.86m to win silver in the long jump at the European Athletics Championships before then finishing eighth at the Olympic Games in Rio.

But millions of television viewers have been shown there is much more to this brilliant young British athlete.

Sawyers, 22, showed nerves of steel of a different kind when she appeared on top reality show The Voice, singing to a panel of judges including Sir Tom Jones.

And with a sensational rendition of Alessia Cara's ‘Here’, the Stoke-on-Trent athlete became a major hit on the stage aswell as she was chosen to progress into the next round of the competition, sparking delight and disbelief.

Sawyers performed in front of top music stars Sir Tom Jones, Will.i.Am, Jennifer Hudson and Gavin Rossdale, who sit with their backs to the singers, only turning their chair if they like what they hear.

All four were impressed, with Black Eyed Peas' founding member Will.i.Am choosing her for his team.

Sawyers said: “Athletics is my first love, it is my main passion, it is what I have been working towards for years, but it is not the only thing in my life.

“Ever since I was a kid, I have always had a great love for music.

“It is hard to have two things that you love, because you need both the attention they deserve, but my motivation to do well in music has shot up.

“Being on the show is a big deal because when I walk out on to the track, I am in control and I get to decide everything that happens. But here, I don't – and that is quite scary.”

As she prepared to perform, she was asked by a friend: “Olympic final or this, what is worse?”

Sawyers replied: “This is worse because I know what I am doing a lot more on the track.”

And seconds before she went on stage, she added: “All I can do is go out there and hope for the best.”

She did not need to hope because her audition was faultless, with Sawyers jumping up and down as Will.i.Am hit his buzzer to turn his chair around.

“I used to do musical theatre as a kid but I stopped when I was about 14 to focus on the sport,” Sawyers told the judges. “And then two-and-a-half years ago I picked up the music again.”

Hudson tasked her: “Which one have you been doing longer?”

Sawyers added: “Long jump – by a mile.”

Will.i.Am quickly said: “You can long jump a mile!”

“Just short,” replied a laughing Sawyers, whose musical journey has just begun.
