Glasgow will find itself at the forefront of the athletics world for three spectacular days in March 2019 when it stages the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

The competition returns to the Scottish city after a gap of 29 years after also staging the 1990 edition, the venue this time being the magnificent Commonwealth Arena

It will be one of the biggest events on the athletics calendar in 2019, and arguably the most important indoor athletics events in the world.

Scotland over the years has produced a number of European indoor champions – middles distance runners Tom McKean, Yvonne Murray, David Strang as well as the siblings Ian, Mary and Peter Stewart – quickly spring to mind.

McKean struck gold over 800m in 1990 to thrill the home crowd and another Scot could be the star of the show again in 2019.

Laura Muir left the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships with two gold medals after sensational performances in the 1500m and 3000m.

She will be looking to defend those titles and, perhaps, improve on the championship best performances she set over both distances in Belgrade. Not surprisingly, the noise is likely to be deafening for a distance runner who seems to improve every time she takes to the track.

It is quite a time for Glasgow and major sports events.

The city will be at the centre of the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in August 2018 when they will welcome over 3,000 competitors from six sports – aquatics, cycling, rowing, triathlon, gymnastics and golf – while the European Athletics Championships take place at the same time in Berlin.

The Commonwealth Arena, built for the hugely successful 2014 Commonwealth Games, has a capacity of 5000 and stages sports events which witness a fantastic atmosphere for fans and participants alike.

In March 2019, the 35th European Athletics Indoor Championships should be three days to remember.
