Shubenkov will home in on glory

Home

Russia's Sergey Shubenkov is building his season around peaking twice and as he has proved in the the last two summers, he is becoming quite a master at it.

His first stop is just a few weeks away at the European Athletics Team Championships in Cheboksary.

And as host nation Russia bid to regain the Super League crown they have won on three of the five occasions the competition has been staged, Shubenkov will be after a personal hat-trick.

The 110m hurdler triumphed in Gateshead in 2013 and then 12 months ago in one of the best races of the weekend in Braunschweig.

It was a taster of what would happen later in the summer when he won in 13.20, a championship record, ahead of William Sharman, of Great Britain, and France’s Pascal Martinot-Lagarde.

A few weeks after that race in Germany, it was the same 1-2-3 at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.

Once more Shubenkov stamped his authority as Europe’s No 1, retaining his title and still at the age of 24, a performer who might not have reached the heights of his power.

He will head to Cheboksary on June 20-21 on the back of races in the IAAF Diamond League in Eugene, Rome and Oslo after revealing he is tapering his season to be at his sharpest first for the European Athletics Team Championships and then for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August.

It might seem a tricky combination, because so often speed is based on one gradual climb, but history shows how good he is at it.

His double win in Braunschweig and Zurich last year came after his Gateshead glory when he then went on to take bronze at the world championships in Moscow.

No gold then, but this time might be different in Russia as his country look to add to their victories at the European Athletics Team Championships in Bergen in 2010, Stockholm in 2011 and Gateshead.

And in Shubenkov, they have a man who thrives on these big occasions.
