It is all change in the world of Swiss sprinter Lea Sprunger.

The 24-year-old Nyon-born athlete has decided to move up to the 400m hurdles and as part of that transition, she will aim to make the team in the flat 400m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague in March.

Her career began as a heptathlete with her finishing 10th in the multi-events at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2008, with her transferring to the 200m by the time of the Olympics in London four years later.

In Zurich this summer, she ran a season’s best of 23.12 in the 200m semi-finals and just missed out on a place in the final before taking the reins of the anchor leg in the 4x100m relay.

Switzerland reached the final as they finished third in their heat in 42.98 but were then disqualified in the final.

Sprunger plans to remain part of that sprint relay team as she makes the move to her new distance.

Staying indoors, and Sweden’s Susanna Kallur is preparing to run on the boards this season.

It has been a long road back from injury for the 33-year-old who still holds the 60m hurdles world indoor record of 7.68 which she set in Karlsruhe in 2008.

She returned to competition this summer for the first time since 2010 when she ran the 100m in Sweden and now is looking forward to the indoors.

Kallur said: 'It seems perfectly reasonable to compete in the winter.'

She remains one of Sweden’s greatest athletes and her three major senior titles have all come on the European stage.

To the delight of the home crowd, she won the 100m hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 2006, a triumph achieved either side of her two golds in the 60m hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Madrid in 2005 and Birmingham in 2007.
