The finalists have been named in the Czech Republic's Athlete of the Year award, and the standard could not be higher.

Just six months before the country stages the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague, the quality of the competitors once more comes to forefront as the events of 2014 are looked back on.

The favourites among the 10 athletes named are: Barbora Spotakova, who returned to the sport this year after having a baby and won javelin gold at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich; Pavel Maslak, the 400m gold medallist from the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot in March; Vitezslav Vesley, who won javelin silver in Zurich; and Anezka Drahotova, who took gold in the 10,000m walk at the World Junior Championships in Eugene and then won 20km bronze in Zurich.

Among the rest of the nominees are the Svobodovas, with sprint hurdler Petr, who returned to the sport this summer after a three-year injury absence, and his wife, pole vaulter Jirina.

They are joined on the list by middle-distance runner Jakub Holusa, pole vaulter Jan Kudlicka, high jumper Jaroslav Baba and hurdler Denisa Rosolova.

The winner will be announced on 8 November at their athletics gala, and these are exciting times for track and field in the Czech Republic.

Maslak is among the leading contenders but he had the upset of not being able to defend his crown at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich because of injury and will aim to retain his European Athletics Indoor title in Prague in March after his glory in Gothenburg in 2013.

Drahatova has had a year to remember.

At only 19, she walked to a world junior record time of 42:47.25 to win in Oregon and then in Zurich just a few weeks later set a national record time of 1:28:08 as she missed out on silver by a mere 0.01.

Spotakova, the world record-holder, completed the set of European javelin medals as she won gold after silver in Gothenburg in 2006 and bronze in Barcelona in 2010.

She has now won gold at all major championships to go one better than her legendary coach Jan Zelezny who had never won the European crown.

Her triumph at the Letzigrund Stadium with a fifth round throw of 64.41m showed she is back in style.
