Is 2016 the year when you try something a little different? Well if you’re looking for a fresh challenge or just simply looking to build up your race distances, the Kilomathon might be the answer you were looking for.

Created in 2010, the Kilomathon offers ‘the perfect race distance’ according to Marketing Manager Annette Drummond.

“When we created the series back in 2010, with events in Derby and Scotland, we felt that sometimes making the jump up in race distances can be hard. For example, from a 5K to a 10K, or a 10K to a half marathon, it can be a big step, and we found there were no races in between to help assist runners with the progression of distance on their running journey. So that’s how the Kilomathon was born!”

Taking place on the beautiful cycle path network around Edinburgh, the Kilomathon offers 13.1km and 6.55km race distances, along with a children’s race over 2.62km. Passing the historic Royal Yacht Britannia and meandering through the picturesque Victoria Park, the race finishes in front of the West Stand at BT Murrayfield Stadium, a fantastic highlight.

But what was the stand out moment of the 2015 edition?

“It was great to see Bryan Mackie storm into the home of Scottish Rugby in under 44 minutes, 90 seconds faster than anyone else and surpassing his own course record. But for me the highlight is always the Mini Kilo race which sees hundreds of youngsters charging around the Murrayfield track. Seeing thousands of runners achieving what they set out to do and cross the finish line with a big smile on their face is always very rewarding.”

The race series has grown since its inception six years ago, and now boasts over 1,500 runners across the three races. The race also prides itself on a smooth process from entry right through to kit collection. Each and every runner receives a goody bag, running belt, accurate chip timing, and a commemorative medal. You can even book your return race bus months in advance!

Given the level of service the race offers in terms of organisation, safety and overall quality, The Kilomathon has been certified as 5-Star Quality Road Race by Running for All. Of this recognition, Drummond commented:

“We're absolutely delighted to receive the 5-star recognition. The standards are greatly important as they ensure that there's a system in place to assess and publicise the quality of mass participation races. At present, only limited regulations exist, and only in some European countries, and they are not always universally understood. So it's great that European Athletics has developed a set of safety and quality standards for public road races.

“Here at GSi Events we're a dedicated team with over 20 years of experience in delivering running events. We're always striving to deliver the best possible experience for our runners, and it's great to be recognised for this - there are also a few keen runners in our team which always helps!”

For 2016 the race has a new website, making the entry process a lot simpler for runners. That’s probably one of the reasons the 6.55km distance has already sold out! But if you want to have a crack at the original 13.1km distance, now’s your chance.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
