The men’s high jump in Zurich will be an event to savour - of that there is no doubt.

In one corner there will be the world champion Bohdan Bondarenko and his Ukrainian teammate Andriy Protsenko and in the other will be Russia’s Ivan Ukhov, the Olympic champion.

It could finally be the meeting where the world record of 2.45m that Javier Sotamayor set in 1993 is broken, such will be the high standard of competition.

And just for now, Ukhov is taking a back seat to prepare for the classic ahead at the Letzigrund Stadium.

It has been quite a summer for the trio, and the best is just a few weeks away.

Bondarenko tops the European Athletics rankings with his European record-equalling 2.42m from New York in June while in the first IAAF Diamond League meeting of the season, Ukhov broke the national record with 2.41m in Doha in May before in Lausanne, Protsenko jumped 2.40m.

But Ukhov’s coach Sergey Klyugin revealed his man will now head to a training camp to put the final touches to his plans.

Ukhov was third in Monaco last Friday with 2.34m as Bondarenko won with 2.40m and Klyugin said: 'After three competitions in a row Ivan feels bit a tired.

'He will have 10 days of rest and then we’ll start the preparation for Zurich.

'We did not choose the training place yet as we have three nice camps in Kislovodsk, Sochi and Novogorsk.

'Ivan just waits for an opportunity now. He didn’t say his last word this season yet and will be ready to fight back.'

Two years ago, Ukhov won Olympic gold in London with 2.38m as Bondarenko finished seventh with 2.29m and Protsenko was joint ninth with 2.25m, but that all changed 12 months later at the World Championships in Moscow.

Ukhov might have been at home but it was all about Bondarenko who won with a championship record of 2.41m. Ukhov was fourth with 2.35m and Protsenko did not make the final.
