Ukraine has named a 16-strong team for the European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal on 10-11 March.

Their team includes former U20 standouts Mykyta Nesterenko in the discus and Alyona Shamotina in the hammer. Nesterenko threw 59.98m to win the discus at the Ukrainian Winter Throwing Championships in Mukachevo while Shamotina threw 67.67m to win the hammer.

Shamotina has progressed well through the age-group ranks and the 22-year-old won her second major title in Bydgoszcz last summer, adding the European U23 title to the world U20 title she won in 2014.

Former European U23 champion Olha Golodna will be a leading contender for the shot put title while Ukrainian record-holder Hanna Hatsko-Fedusova will compete in the javelin where she will face Germans Katharina Molitor and Christin Hussong.

The start of the month will be a busy one for precocious multi-eventer Alina Shukh. One week after contesting the pentathlon at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, the reigning European U20 heptathlon champion will compete in the U23 javelin in Leiria.

Still only 19, Shukh won the U20 javelin title at the Ukrainian Winter Throwing Championships with 51.29m. Her lifetime best stands at 56.54m.
