Reigning world javelin champion Johannes Vetter will gauge how his preparations are progressing when he take part in a competition at his training base in Offenburg on 3 February.

Vetter won the gold medal at the IAAF World Championships in London last August with a first round throw of 89.89m and the event will be one of the highlights at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships where he will face his domestic rival and Olympic champion Thomas Rohler.

Vetter produced six throws in excess of the 90m line in 2017 across three competitions and he also surpassed Rohler’s national record with 94.44m in Luzern in July to move to second on the world all-time lists behind Jan Zelezny. He was then duly named male European Athlete of the Year at the Golden Tracks award ceremony in Vilnius, Lithuania last October.

Vetter is set to face competition from world U20 champion and record-holder Neeraj Chopra from India while the women’s line-up features French record-holder Mathilde Andraud.
