It was a weekend when Prague was on the mind as national championships took place across Europe.

And the outcome of many events gave a hint as to who could be leaving the 02 Arena with gold next month at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

At Sheffield, the women’s high jump was sensational with two of Great Britain’s leading multi-eventers showing their individual talent.

Victory went to Katarina Johnson-Thompson with 1.97m, a British record, beating Morgan Lake, whose 1.94m was a British junior record.

It secures their places in the team for Prague, but they could yet opt for the pentathlon.

Johnson-Thompson, who topped the world heptathlon list in 2014, showed the level of her determination to progress even more when she told British Athletics: 'I am glad to jump a personal best but I cannot believe I am a little disappointed to jump 1.97m.'

That came on the first day of the championships; on the second, Thompson-Johnson twice broke her 60m hurdles personal best with 8.35 in the heats and then 8.25 as she finished fourth in the final.

Jenny Meadows, 33, the European Indoor 800m champion in 2011, won a seventh British title with victory in 2:01.43.

I am starting to feel in the form of my life so I hope to get some true results in the major championships this year.

Defending a title can always be harder than winning it in the first place but Serbia’s Asmir Kolasinac and Dutchman Eelco Sintnicolaas celebrated victories that will stand them in good stead for Prague.

In Novi Sad, Kolasinac’s second round shot put of 20.91m was a European lead and national record for a man who won the title in Gothenburg 2013 with 20.62m.

Sintnicolaas was trailing to Pieter Braun overnight in Apeldoorn in the heptathlon - 3180 points to 3114 - but reversed the fortunes on the second day to take the crown, 5892-5837.

Poland’s men showed how competitive places in the 1500m will be for their team for the European Athletics Indoor Championships as four runners dipped under 3:42 in one race in Torun, with Mateusz Demczyszak winning in 3:41.34 from Artur Ostrowski in 3:41.36, Krzysztof Zebrowski in 3:41.49 and Szymon Krawczyk in 3:41.64.

Away from the track, Roetselaar staged the sixth leg of Lotto CrossCup where, over 6.2km, Louise Carton, who leads the series, won in 20:13 from Belgian teammate Almensch Belete, second in 20:37, and Sweden’s Sarah Lahti, third in 20:40.
