The European Athletics U23 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for European athletes in the age group 20-22.
It was introduced in 1997 to provide a transition between U20 - formerly junior - competition and the senior ranks but also often attracts established international competitors.
Held&nbsp; in&nbsp; July&nbsp; and attracting more than 1000 competitors, the&nbsp; four-day&nbsp; event&nbsp; is&nbsp; not&nbsp; confined&nbsp; to&nbsp; the&nbsp; events in the stadium as it can bring the race walking road events to the heart of the city.
The most recent edition was held in Tallinn, Estonia in 2021 and the next European Athletics U23 Championships will be in Espoo, Finland between 13-16 July, 2023.

As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.
The Championships bring together the best European athletes who habitually produce outstanding performances which, in turn, provides a glittering spectacle for both athletics afficianadoes and general sports fans alikes and generates huge TV audiences across Europe.
First held in 1934 in Turin, Italy, from 2010 the European Championships have been organised every two years and since 2018 they form part of the quadrennial multi-sport event, the European Championships.
In 2022, the European Athletics Championships will form part of the European Championships Munich 2022 with eight other sports.

European Athletics Championship

The biennial championships are the biggest indoor event organised by European Athletics.
More than the 600 athletes from the 51 European Athletics Member Federations participate in the three/four-day event.
First held as a Championships in 1970, the competition was held annually until 1990 and then switched to being held every two years, usually across the first weekend in March.
The most recent Championships were held in Torun, Poland in 2021 and the next European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in Istanbul, Turkey between 2-5 March.

The European Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for European athletes.
It is one of European Athletics' oldest competitions, first held in 1970 after three editions of the unofficial European Junior Games which started in 1964.
Usually held in the second half of July since 1993, it attracts more than 1000 competitors to the the&nbsp; four-day&nbsp; event. The most recent edition was held in Tallinn, Estonia in 2021 and the next European Athletics U20 Championships will be in Cluj-Napoca, Romania in the summer of 2023.

The European Athletics U18 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for European athletes under the age of 18. It was created to promote higher-level competition among the more talented members of this age group in Europe and provide a stepping stone to the U20 age group.
First held in 2016, the 2020 edition had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic but the next Championships are scheduled to take place in Jerusalem, Israel between 4-7 July 2022.

World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver and Bronze Meetings

The event marks the beginning of the outdoor season for European throwers and many of European best exponents compete in the Cup.

Throwing events - shot put, discus, javelin and hammer - have traditionally been European strengths and this annual event gives an early indication of what to expect in the coming season.

As a team competition, competitors are also battling for points to help their nation in the overall standings.

The points earned by athletes are accumulated to determine the final ranking of participant teams.

The most important cross country event on the European calendar attracts the best distance running talents from across the continent in the U20, U23 and senior categories for both genders.
It is usually held on the second Sunday of December.&nbsp;
The first edition of the championships was held in Alnwick, Great Britain in 1994. The most recent edition was held in Fingal-Dublin, Ireland last December while the next SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be in Torino, Italy on 12 December 2022.&nbsp;

World Athletics Cross Country Tour Silver and Bronze Meetings

The European 10,000m Cup dates from 1997 when it was held under its initial title of the European 10,000 Metres Challenge.&nbsp;
Notable names on the roll-of-honour at the Cup include Spain's Jose Manuel Martinez (2004 and 2009), Great Britain's Mo Farah (2010) and Italy's Daniele Meucci (2016) on the men&rsquo;s side and multiple winners Fernanda Ribeiro from Portugal (1998 and 2003), Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe (1999, and 2001) and fellow Portuguese runner Sara Moreira (2011, 2012 and 2017) among the women.
As well as competing for individual and team honours, the European 10,000m Cup also provides an opportunity for athletes to get qualifying times for the major global championships of the summer such as the 2022 World Athletics Championships as well as the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships.

European Race Walking Team Championships

The inaugural European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships, an innovative continental championship that combines the disciplines of trail and mountain running, will take place in El Paso on the Spanish island of La Palma on 1-3 July 2022.
On Thursday 30 June, four days of events will begin with a mass participation race, the third edition of the La Subida a las Estrellas (The Climb to the Stars), a 3.2km run that will take place under the spectacular night sky of La Palma in the Canary Islands.
On Friday 1 July, the official part of competition program opens with European titles at stake in the mountain running &lsquo;uphill&rsquo; races, which will be 6km of gruelling climbing from the foot of the Bejenao mountain to the summit of the Pista de Ferrer, which involves almost 800 metres of ascent up to an altitude of 1600m. The Bejenao mountain is in the centre of the island itself and the race will pass through some spectacular scenery and also by the island&rsquo;s famous petroglyphs, designs carved into the rock face by the island's indigenous people that are thought to date back more than millennia.
The following day it will be the turn of trail runners to display their talent, contesting the first-ever official continental title in the discipline, with men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s race over approximately 45km.
The route of the races takes in the Bejenao mountain, a hard ascent of the Revent&oacute;n pass, the Cumbre Vieja, the Llano de los Jables and the emblematic Pino de la Virgen with much of the race taking place in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
The third and final day on Sunday 3 July will see the competition programme close with &lsquo;up and down&rsquo; mountain running races, with men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s senior and U20 races.
The senior races will be over a circuit of 16.8km, and include approximately 300 metres of climb and descent per 5-6km of the course, while the U20 races will be over 6km.
One of the stars of the the championships is expected to be the Swiss runner Maude Mathys but the big question could be, which event will she contest? Mathys won the European Mountain Running title three times between 2017-2019 and many would like to see her go for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title in El Paso but this year she has dominated the Golden Trail World Series and won the finale on the nearby island of El Hierro over 37km by five minutes.
If Mathys does opt to go for trail running honours, she could find herself battling with the women who finished immediately behind her in October's World Series finale with the Netherlands' Nienke Brinkman and France's Anais Sabrie finishing second and third respectively.
Although this will be inaugeral European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships, the Local Organising Committee bring with them a wealth of experience having organised many other high-level off road events inclusing the 2000 Spanish Trail Running Championships.&nbsp;
Royal Spanish Athletics Federation President and European Athletics Council member Ra&uacute;l Chapado commented: &ldquo;First of all, we want to thank European Athletics for their trust. This is great news for Spanish athletics. This decision, without a doubt, also represents a recognition of the great development work that is being carried out in Spain in this particular athletics discipline in recent years. This is a championship that will serve as a boost and generate renewed energy for our athletes.&rdquo;
&ldquo;It is a tribute to excellent organisational team locally, the consistent support of the institutions and a stunning natural environment that has already have made El Paso a trail running paradise, not only nationally, but also internationally. We want to leave a lasting legacy that will help promote the image of El Paso and the island of La Palma.&rdquo;
The Mayor of El Paso Sergio Rodr&iacute;guez added: &ldquo;The choice of this location for these championships represents the culmination of an objective that we set for ourselves years ago. We all saw clearly the potential of the resources that exist in El Paso and La Palma.&rdquo;
