  • Cheptegei confirmed for European Athletics Endurance Summit

World 10,000m silver medallist Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda and his coach Addy Ruiter from the Netherlands will be among the star attractions of the European Athletics Endurance Summit in Skanderborg, Denmark on 24-25 November.

The European Athletics Endurance Summit is part of the European Athletics Coaching Summit Series which brings together leading coaches and experts in a series of yearly theoretical and practical seminars. The Coaching Summit Series took place for the first time in 2008 and is a key component of European Athletics’ strategy to promote and support coaching across all levels.

With the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo fast approaching, Cheptegei and Ruiter will be addressing the pertinent issue of how to compete in extreme conditions. They will also be participating in a Q+A session and each presentation will conclude with a best practices part in which they talk about their experiences on the topic.

Other topics will address the matter of cross country running at elite level, training at altitude ahead of major competitions and training and competing in challenging conditions.

Seven-time world orienteering champion Maja Alm and her coach Lars Lindstrom are also among the confirmed roster of speakers and they will talk about transitioning from orienteering to athletics in order to fulfil Alm’s dream of participating at the 2020 Olympics.

Lindstrom will give a presentation entitled: “Mapping the success – Coaching an orienteering world champion and transfer into athletics” while Alm will participate in a follow-up Q+A session on her new focus.

With the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships taking place around 30 kilometres away in Aarhus, cross country will be one of the prominent themes throughout the two-day summit. The summit also coincides with the Skanderborg Cross, a European Athletics Cross Country Permit event, on 24 November and will take place on a course not too dissimilar to the proposed course for the World Cross Country Championships.

The European Athletics Endurance Summit will be conducted entirely in English. Places are still available and registration can be completed by following this link. A full itinerary can also be found here.
