European Athletics is deeply saddened by the news that long-time official and referee with the Czech Athletics Federation Petr Zeman has died at the age of 78.
Zemen died after being struck in the chest by a shot put in an accident during a regional youth competition in Prague on Saturday (13). The competition was promptly cancelled after the accident.
“I am shocked and saddened to hear the news that Petr Zeman died while officiating a competition in Prague on Saturday,' said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.
'I would like to pass on my deepest condolences and sympathies to Petr’s friends and families and my thoughts to all of those affected by this tragic accident.'
