World and European U20 100m hurdles champion Elvira Herman will be in contention for her first senior medal at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships later this summer after producing one of the highlights of the afternoon at the Meeting Elite de Montgeron on Sunday (13).
Herman broke the European U20 record with 12.85 to upset the favoured Americans at the 2016 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz two years ago and the Belarusian broke that lifetime best by more than one-tenth on her season’s debut.
After clocking 12.88 in the heats, Herman then won the final in a European-leading mark of 12.74 in legal wind conditions to eclipse Isabelle Pedersen’s mark from the Shanghai Diamond League by 0.02.
On her return from maternity leave, former European silver medallist Cindy Billaud was seventh in 13.55 after clocking 13.40 in the heats.

Wins for European U20 champions Nedasekau and Lamou
There was another notable win for Belarus in the high jump as 20-year-old Maksim Nedasekau, who set a championship record of 2.33m at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto last year, cleared 2.26m in his first outdoor competition of the season to clinch the win ahead of Kenya’s Mathew Sawe with 2.18m.

Another gold medallist from Grosseto prevailed in Montgeron. Martin Lamou, who is still eligible for U20 competitions through until the end of the year, celebrated his 19th birthday by winning the triple jump with a fifth round jump of 16.76m.
There were two more notable wins on the in-field for European athletes. Competing as Authorised Neutral Athletes, Viktor Butenko went out to 62.78m to win the men’s discus and Yulia Maltseva won the women’s discus with 60.61m.
Also on the track, Jamile Samuel from the Netherlands won the 100m in 11.27 from Great Britain's Daryll Neita in 11.35.
