On the horizon is the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague in March and some of the continent’s leading stars have revealed this week their early plans for the next few months.

The pole vault remains one of the great spectacles in athletics these days; such has been the breathtaking consistency of Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie.

At the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in the summer of 2013, Lavillenie was beaten to gold by Germany’s Raphael Holzdeppe and a head-to-head between this pair would be a thriller in Prague's 02 Arena.

Holzdeppe missed this year’s European Athletics Championships in Zurich with a back injury but Lavillenie would have taken some stopping as he soared to gold with 5.90m on his way to being named European Athletics’ Male Athlete of the Year.

An early indication of what Lavillenie might face in Prague will come just three days into 2015 when Holzdeppe competes at a new meeting in Merzig.

Details have been revealed this week of the competition, which will take place under a circus tent, and Holzdeppe will face, among others, Pawel Wojciechowski, Poland’s world champion in 2011 who was second behind Lavillenie, with 5.70m, in Zurich.

The event might also see the return of Germany’s Bjorn Otto, who was also forced to miss Zurich with a hamstring injury.

Great Britain’s Mo Farah is a double gold medallist in the 3000m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships after his successes in Turin in 2009 and Paris in 2011 and his first race will be at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham in February.

He said: 'I have great memories of setting three British records here over the years. My last track race was in Birmingham in August...where I finished my track year with a win over 2 miles, so it would be great to start 2015 in the same way.'

It could be an interesting winter, too, for Sweden's Susanna Kallur, the 60m hurdles world indoor record-holder who has not run indoors for more than six years.

Now back after injury, she will return to the event at the XL Galan in Stockholm in February.
