King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands will attend the opening ceremony of the European Athletics Championships on Tuesday 5 July 2016 at Museumplein in Amsterdam.

The opening ceremony is scheduled at 17:00 with all 51 participating Member Federations having chosen an athlete to represent each country as flag-bearer.

Following the ceremony, King Willem-Alexander will meet with several Dutch athletes to give them that extra bit of motivation before the start of the championships.

Competitions start the next day in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium and at Museumplein. There, in the heart of Amsterdam, the javelin and discus throwing qualifications will take place, with the famous Rijksmuseum as the backdrop. This is the first time that such throwing events are held outside the stadium in the history of the event.
