The Convention itself can trace its origins back to 1946 when national federations gathered primarily to coordinate their competition calendars at what was then known as the European Calendar Conference.

The event was transformed into the European Athletics Convention in 2008 and since then become an ever more important event, serving as an educational and motivational meeting as well as fulfilling the technical and organisational needs of Member Federations.
