RunCzech celebrated a substantial milestone in the Volkswagen Prague Marathon last Sunday (6) as the organisers welcomed home the millionth finisher in race series history.

The Prague International Marathon is the oldest race in the RunCzech series dating back to 1995. The series has since spread across the Czech Republic with eight races on the calendar in not only Prague but also Olomouc, Karlovy Vary, Ceske Budejovice and Usti nad Labem.

“This essentially means we have managed to change the lives of ten percent of the Czech population. We really value their support and will do our utmost to continue to earn their trust and respect in the years to come,” said RunCzech Organising Committee President Carlo Capalbo, one of the driving forces of the inaugural staging of the Prague Marathon more than two decades ago.

The runner who had the distinction of being the millionth finisher was called Jakub and he was presented with a special t-shirt as well as a lifetime guarantee of free start numbers to all RunCzech races.

“It was really well organised and I thoroughly enjoyed the celebration,” said Jakub, who started running four years ago. “I started out running short relays with my company but then I got hooked and now I have three marathons under my belt. I’ve run once in New York and twice in Prague.”

The Volkswagen Prague Marathon is one of seven races in the RunCzech series to hold a five-star certification rating from European Athletics Running for All. This certification assures runners the event organisers have met stringent quality checks on all aspects of the race including safety, security and organisation.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong, recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
