Ryzhova targets single success

Home

The medal record of Kseniya Ryzhova makes impressive reading: 2007 - gold; 2009 - gold; 2011 - gold; 2013 - gold.

But now she is ready to take her career to a new level, if that is possible having made it to the top of the podium on four occasions in seven years.

All her successes have come as part of a glorious Russian relay team, but this winter she is in the market for individual success too, and she is going the right way about it.

Moscow is staging the Russian Indoor Championships ahead of their team being selected for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot next month.

And in two successive days, Ryzhova, 26, has set down some impressive 400m markers.

In the first round, she soared to victory in 51.06, the fastest time in the world this year, and then 24 hours later, on Tuesday, she went ever quicker, winning the title in 51.03.

Impressive running from a woman who took the baton for the third leg in Moscow last summer, as Russia’s women won gold in the 4 x 400m relay at the World Championships.

However it was her actions on the podium which made the headlines, when she kissed Russian teammate Yulia Gushchina on the lips.

Now Ryzhova, who leads the world rankings by 0.66 from American Natasha Hastings, knows exactly what she wants the winter to bring.

She said:  “My task for this season is to be in top three at world indoors. If I could do it I’ll be the happiest person on earth.”

Speaking to Rusathletics.com, she added: “I noted that the women's 400m final in Sopot will be on March 8 (International Women's day in Russia). I would like to make this special gift for myself.”

Her victory at these Russian championships came with a superb run in the final as she won by over a second from Irina Davydova, the European 400m hurdles champion, in 52.51 and Alena Tamkova third with 52.86.

Ryzhova’s first gold medal on the major stage came in the 4 x 100m relay at the European Athletics Under-23 Championships in Debrecen in 2007 and then two years later, at the same championships, she was part of the 4 x 400m relay winning team.

Success on the senior stage arrived at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Paris in 2011 in the 4 x 400m before her glory in Moscow in August and now Sopot awaits the newest chapter in her impressive story.
