  • Sweden expected to send strong women’s squad to Zurich

Over 50 athletes are expected to represent Sweden in Zurich, with the medal hopes are mostly found on the women’s side.

A handful of them are expected to open next year with the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, before making their way to the most anticipated event of the year, the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, on 12-17 August.

Among them will be the highly talented sprinter Irene Ekelund who already holds the 200m Swedish indoor record 23.15, at age 16.

She is one of the most exciting young runners in Europe, and her performances will be followed quite closely as she aims to be a candidate for Zurich.

With the emergence of Abeba Aregawi at last year’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow, she will be the one to beat all season long, especially in Zurich where she will look to add another title to her collection.

High-jumper Emma Green Tregaro has already enjoyed great success at the European Athletics Championships winning silver with a personal best 2.01 jump in Barcelona in 2010 and then taking bronze in Helsinki in 2012.

Added to the mix will be the 2012 European Athletics Rising Star, pole vaulter Angelica Bengtsson. She has made an early indoor debut in Lyon taking second place with a 4.41m jump.

Swedish head coach Karin Torneklint hopes that Gothenburg 2006 European 110m hurdles champion Susanna Kallur will make her comeback in 2014 and be ready in time for Zurich.

Her return to competition at the age of 33 would certainly be one of the biggest intrigues of the week in Switzerland, as it will be interesting to see if she can regain her form of the past.

Meanwhile, European 400m champion Moa Hjelmer is pregnant and will take a break from athletics.

“I feel that the break from athletics will allow me to extend my career until the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and today it is not so complicated to combine children and career,” she told aftonbladet.se.

Sweden has been known for having a strong group of women to represent them at the major championships, and 2014 will be no exception.
