The Special Olympics European Summer Games 2014 - the largest multi-sport event this year for athletes with intellectual disabilities - will be held in Antwerp, Belgium, 13-20 September.

Approximately 2,000 athletes from 58 countries are expected to compete in ten different sports including athletics.

Running, jumping and throwing remains the base of all sports, and it is important that athletics continues to be accessible to all individuals no matter what.

This competition gives athletes the desire to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, feel joy and share experiences.

Belgium's very own André Schepers will be among those competing as he holds European records over 10,000m and the half-marathon. A video portrait of him as well as the event website are available under 'Related Links'.

The Games will be officially declared open by Queen Mathilde of Belgium with thousands of spectators, volunteers and officials taking part.

In addition to the sports competitions there will be various community-building events throughout the week.
